Food, Fun, Fireworks... Canadian Style

oh Canada! This year we celebrated Canada Day at our home with a BANG!
When my family celebrates holidays and special occasions, there is no denying we always do it big.
Go big or go home -- that is definitely my family's motto.

One of the things we tend to "go big" on is the food.
We are a family of foodies and if you leave one of our family parties on an empty stomach, there's something terribly wrong with that.
"Eat! Enjoy! Cheers! More wine?" Words echoed frequently around here.

As I had mentioned before, my home is where gatherings tend to gravitate towards. No complaints as I love entertaining and enjoy being surrounded by family and friends.

Thank goodness this year, our home was graced with our brand new Frigidaire!
Our new fridge came in extremely handy this past Canada Day Long Weekend.

It was so easy to find everything I needed in this jam-packed fridge with the LED lighting and pull-out shelves and most importantly it was able to hold everything we required for a successful Canada Day party!

No food or drink was left out!
The feature that was most helpful (aside from the space), was the Flip-Up and Slide-Under Shelf.
With this awesome feature, we were able to accommodate the tall drinks and awkward-shaped containers easily with just a flip and a slide. I really, really love this!

The biggest issue I had during hosting previous gatherings with my old fridge was the lack of space. Food (and especially leftovers) would spoil easily being left out because I couldn't get it to fit inside the fridge and getting all the drinks in there was near impossible. We'd have to leave them out and just keep them on ice buckets which would have to be filled frequently - what a nuisance!
This fridge was truly a life-saver! I don't know how I survived this long being the party hostess that I am without my Frigidaire.

It left us with nothing to stress or worry about during our Canada Day Party except for one thing...
What do I eat first?

I hope you all enjoyed your Canada Day Long Weekend!

Happy Easter!

Fresh Pink and White Tulips, Bright Colourful Eggs, Chocolate Bunnies and a special Easter Story, Easter Weekend in our home is always filled with all things sweet, bright and cheerful.

Have you got any Easter Family Traditions?
Every Good Friday, our family watches the Toronto Passion Play at the Queensway Cathedral.
This is something my family and I have done since I was a younger girl.

Toronto Passion Play
It has continued to my little family now and yesterday (Good Friday 2013) was the first time my little girl watched the Toronto Passion Play and learned more about the special Easter Story.
That, to us, Easter is much more than chocolate eggs and the Easter Bunny... although we love all that too!

Along with that, usually on the Sunday during Easter Weekend, we hold a fun Easter Egg Hunt at either one of our family member's home or at a park.
The children would grab their baskets, find the eggs that were thrown and hidden all around (close by) and would win a big treat at the end. There are never any losers in the bunch.
Overflowing baskets all around!

Following the Egg Hunt, Easter Feast is usually held in my parent's home complete with an array of delicious food and desserts. Yum!

It's always a great time celebrating Easter in our home!

Wishing you and yours a Happy and Enjoyable Easter!

Family Traditions at The Nutcracker Ballet

It was a magical night filled with massive mice with swords, skating bears, a flock of lambs, Fairies and Men in tights... yes, you guessed it (or just left wondering what on earth...), last Saturday a new tradition began in my family with The Nutcracker Ballet.

The original Nutcracker Ballet is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It was given its première at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on Sunday, 18 December 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky's opera, Iolanta.

Although the original production was not a success, the twenty-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. However, the complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in the U.S. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions, in particular the pieces featured in the suite

Taking place at The National Ballet of Canada in The Four Seasons Centre For The Performing Arts, a childhood favourite of mine came to life and was introduced for the first time to my four year old daughter who fell so in love with it as well.

She loved it so much in fact, that as soon as she came home she would not stop prancing around to Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
She has also began asking to be enrolled in ballet classes.

It is a refreshingly traditional version of the story, replete with the details of childhood dreams and the appeal of fantasy, a ballet gloriously designed and costumed and brimming with affection for and insight into the passage from childhood to maturity that all children make.

Re-setting the story to Imperial Russia, with its simple folk customs and its overwhelming opulence, choreographer James Kudelka allows full rein to both his instincts for everyday beauty and dazzling spectacle, for natural wonder and dreamlike astonishment, all conveyed in an array of breathtaking choreography. The entire production is a glittering, enchanting gem of a ballet, a work that is at once deeply familiar and forever new.

We had amazing Orchestra Seats in the very front row, seated at numbers 28, 29 & 30 which happens to be an amazing coincidence as they were the only seats left that night and all three numbers are the days we were born (my husband, daughter and I).

It was all I imagined it would be -- beautiful, enchanting, enigmatic even (but in a good way) filled with tons of surprises; I was almost put to tears at times. The orchestra was absolutely perfect and truly brought the ballet to life with the beautiful sounds of Tchaikovsky that I love so much.

My favourite parts of the ballet definitely have to be Snow Queen and her Icicles, Snow Maidens, The Sugar Plum Fairy, Spanish Chocolate and Flowers and Branches.

It was a great night watching The Nutcracker with our daughter and plan to begin this tradition each year during the Holiday Season.

Ava came home with her very own little nutcracker that she can cherish forever and attach to the memory of her very first time she saw The Nutcracker with her mommy and daddy.
We also got an adorable wooden trapeze toy for our son who we hope to bring with us when he gets older as well.

I highly recommend you watch it, even once. I long to go again simply to listen to the orchestra play.  I cannot get over how amazing they were.

Post-Holiday Wrap Up & A Big Welcome to 2013

December is always such a chaotic month for my family.
On top of the Christmas prep, we also have tons of birthdays to celebrate as well which makes for extra chaos.
BUT, it's always worth it.
Nothing beats spending quality time with those that you truly love and care for -- nothing but good vibes, good food, lots of laughter and of course the magic of the season.

Every year we celebrate with my entire immediate family. This year was super special because it was my son's first Christmas. Although we were pretty adamant that we did not want to host this year having a new baby and all and since we hosted last year, we knew it would mean a lot more if it was held in our home.

This is also the year we realized we need to make a bigger effort at disguising who "Santa" is moving forward because our incredibly smart four year old's cannot be fooled. "That's not Santa, it's Lolo Ed (Grandpa)!"
Ha!
To save the night, I piped in by saying, "Oh well, Santa said you are not allowed to see him so he let Grandpa borrow his magic Santa Suit and gave him all the gifts to give you all!"
It worked!

It was perfect and I couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate Christmas.

For New Years Eve, it was an unusual turn of events this year.  Every single person in our family came down with a mysterious yet potent and ugly virus which meant ringing in the new year on medications, surrounded by kleenex and reeking of Vicks Vaporub.
Again, because it was my son's first NYE and I was feeling a tad better, I went ahead and prepped for a great final 2012 dinner. I popped open the wine and bubbly and mustered up enough energy to stay up till midnight with a smile on my face for the sake of my family (and very energetic kids that managed to stay up till 2 AM!)

It was a good night and the best part of it all was that once the clock struck midnight and the beautiful sounds of Auld Lang Syne played in the background (always gets the tears going), I welcomed this new year in the arms of my beautiful family.

I raise my glass to you all; to a new year filled with good health, happiness, prosperity and wonderful new memories! Cheers!

Style, Safety & Class in the Infiniti JX

Last week we had the ride of our lives, literally.
We were lucky to be given a fully-loaded Infiniti JX35 to test drive and review for one week by Infiniti Canada and experience the Infiniti difference.

We loved the JX!
The model that we reviewed was the MY13 JX35 in Black Obsidian colour with a graphite interior.
The JX only comes in one model starting at a base of $44, 900 with available options.
Our JX included all options such as: Premium, Theatre, Deluxe Touring & Tech (includes Drivers Assistance Package) with the price totaling $58,400 (before taxes, delivery & destination).

As a busy family that's constantly on the go -- appointments, work, meetings, errands, etc., it was so important that we  review a vehicle that was accommodating to our hectic lifestyle.
We needed good space, reliability, decent-good fuel economy, great safety features and of course, it doesn't hurt for it to look stylish and beautiful at the same time.
The Infiniti JX fit the bill!

With the ability to carry up to 7 passengers (this includes 3rd row reclining seats), I was surprised at how spacious it still was given the amount of passengers.  I know because we had a few extra family members join us on an evening cruise in the JX which prompted us to utilize the extra seats in the back. It's definitely not for the long legged person though; I'd recommend children or shorter passengers in the extra seats in the back.

On top of that, it provides one-handed easy access for sliding the 2nd row seats forward even with a car seat & child still on it. Amazing!

Before I ramble on with all the fabulous features this vehicle has to offer, let me talk about our top 3 features first.

Our Top 3 Infiniti JX Features
1) The world's first Backup Collision Intervention
2) Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection and Front and Rear Sonar System
3) Infiniti Intelligent Key with power rear liftgate and available remote start

The first on this list, many have already seen on the TV commercial.  Simply put, when backing up from a parking spot or driveway, the sensors will a detect moving object (i.e. a child or bike or both!) that will stop the vehicle for a full second if you're not on the brake pedal.
This safety feature is very useful in child-friendly neighborhoods such as ours and gives us peace of mind whenever we're backing out of our driveway.

The 2nd feature on our favourites blew our minds!!! We've never seen this technology in a vehicle -- this is the world's first!
The ability to see a bird's eye view of a vehicle and moving objects around it in real-time is absolutely astounding.
The Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection will pick up movement from vehicles, people and objects and will warn you if one is coming too close to your vehicle by an amber light and a beep on both the inside of the driver and passenger side doors. You will also be able to see this on the monitor.
The Front and Rear Sonar System is especially helpful in regards to your blind spots while driving or changing lanes.

On an especially dark evening, we were on an uphill road in a not-so-well lit street and as we proceeded to change lanes from the left to the right, a speeding vehicle fast approached us at the same time we were changing lanes -- at that moment the amber light on the front passenger side turned on and started beeping to alert us that a vehicle was in our blind spot.

When reversing, this is what you will see on the monitor. Amazing!
Front view on monitor -- notice you can see a moving person in front + what's going on on the sides.
The 3rd feature is the Infiniti Intelligent Key.
This was a great one for moms that almost often are carrying so many things (including children!) in and out of vehicles.
Getting in and out of the vehicle was effortless as this Inifinity Intelligent Key provided keyless entry, one-touch button to open and close liftgate automatically, Illuminated Push Button Ignition and remote start (this was an additional added option).

More of the impressive features in the Infiniti JX includes:
  • 265 HP 3.5-litre V6 engine
  • Infiniti Connection System with safety and security services
  • 15-speaker Bose Cabin Surround 5.1-channel sound system
  • 60/40-split folding, sliding second-row bench seats with available heated outboard seats
  • 50/50-split folding, third-row seats with recline
  • Infiniti Intelligent-View Display
Now the most important part will have to be the creature-comfort and overall performance of the JX.
We found 265 HP was adequate enough speed on daily city driving and passing. Mind you, this is no sports car and geared more towards a comfortable and safe ride.
The suspension was great in absorbing bumps and imperfections on the road and we felt that it was in between a Lexus RX350 and an Acura MDX (having been driven and in both vehicles which family members own).
Considering we were riding on 20's which are the biggest wheels the JX offers, the ride was pretty smooth and comfortable. So comfortable in fact, every ride put our three year old straight to dreamland.
There was even a time we took her for a quick drive around the neighborhood to calm a tantrum and get her to sleep and it worked!

In regards to style this vehicle will definitely get noticed on the road.

Now that is one stylish, sophisticated and beautiful vehicle!

With distinctively flowing lines and boasting a charismatic appeal with its prominent grill, Infiniti insignia and chrome accents sprinkled around the vehicle, the JX shouts pure luxury and class.
The interior materials is no less appealing than it's exterior.

Considering all the technology this vehicle offers, the controls were easily accessible.
We loved the feel of the leather seats and the fact that our vehicle also offered not just heating BUT cooling front seats as well (Climate-controlled front seats).  This I LOVED especially during this extremely humid weather!

Cooled seats in sticky-hot weather? Yes, please!

Some of the other great features in the interior that we loved (there are just so many great ones to mention) included:
  • Tri-Zone Automatic Temperature Control system with microfilter
  • 8 cup holders and 6 bottle holders
  • Front centre console with armrest, dual-level storage compartment, 12-volt power outlet, auxiliary input jacks and USB connection port
  • Cargo net tie-down anchors in cargo area
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Sequential welcome lighting illuminated entry system and overhead ambient light
  • Moonroof

Let's get down to the affordability factor.
We think it's fairly priced considering all the tech and features if offers compared to it's competition (i.e. the Acura MDX).  For a luxury SUV, Infiniti really stretched the dollar on this one.
If you're in the market for a luxury mid-sized SUV, definitely add this to your list of top-picks (it's definitely on ours!)

We had an enjoyable week reviewing the Infiniti JX and are gracious to Infiniti Canada for giving us the opportunity to review this wonderful vehicle.  It truly did leave us inspired.

Bonne Fête du Canada!

This past Sunday we celebrated our country's 145th birthday!
Every year we like to make sure we wear our red & white loud and proud, eat lots of great food, enjoy the company of our loved ones and of course end the night with beautiful fireworks.

After having children, events and holidays such as this just get more and more exciting.
Ava absolutely loves celebrating us much as we do and is usually the loudest of us all!  Usually you will hear her hollering, "Happy Birthday, Canada!" waving her little flag -- it is so adorable!
Love seeing her patriotism.

This year in particular was no different, even though I'm 7 months pregnant. I couldn't cook/bake as much and we were not able to head out and do a lot of walking at any local Canada Day festivities or head down to the cottage but we did as much as we can in our home, just the family.  It was wonderful! Small but mighty  (just like our family!)
Had a great meal, enjoyed some sparklers and fun in our backyard and then headed over to a local area where our neighborly farm gave a spectacular light show!
I can't think of a better way to ring in Canada's birthday than with those you love.

Hope you all enjoyed your Canada Day!

Oh... and congratulations to Spain for the big Euro Cup win too! Woohoo! (We were tuned in for sure!)

Christmas Eve at the Gomez's

T'was an evening filled with heaps of laughter, scrumptious food and wine, close family and myriad amount of presents under the glimmering tree.
Every Christmas Eve, our small but mighty family takes turns in hosting the annual Tasico Family Christmas Party or what we refer to as Nochebuena, which is a traditional dinner we have on Christmas Eve.

We had such a wonderful time with family and most importantly, the children had a blast!
I'm very blessed to have a great group of supportive and loving family to celebrate with.
Whatever you celebrate, I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday as well! Salud!
