Squashing the Green-Eyed Monster in Community

As a blogger AND as a project manager that works with bridging awesome brands and bloggers for Brand Ambassador programs, it gives me a total advantage because I truly understand what both sides are looking for.
Bloggers want to be appreciated, recognized and compensated for their hard work and loyalty and Brands want to be represented and also acknowledged for who they are by people that truly understand their vision and goals and will band together with them to build strong and ardent connections while continuously fostering a relationship with them.

One of the sad realities that I have come to face as a blogger is that there is such a loss of community and real support.
Sure there are "blogger support groups" that work together to make sure each blogger is accepted and all posts are spread across their social circles to optimize traffic, but aside from that, I feel like there is far too much competition in the blogging community.

Do you really care that much if another fellow blogger to whom you sometimes engage in social conversation with just so happens to work with a brand you've been dying to work with or gets invited to a media event that you just didn't get an invite to?
What about when that brand reaches out to you and says, "Do you know of any other bloggers that you can connect us with that would be fitting to represent our brand and/or campaign?"
Do you a) Ignore that request and try to keep that brand's connection to yourself b) Spread the word to all of those bloggers in your "inner" social circles c) Do B PLUS reach out to bloggers that you know of that would be a great fit in working with this blogger.

If you picked C - you are a first-class, positive blogger and also very rare.

Let me emphasize on what I mean when I say "inner" social circles.
Let's not deny it bloggers. You have a group of fellow blogger friends that you are super comfortable working with and you can't help but stick to what you're comfortable with, right?
It's kind of like high school all over again, isn't it?

I also work with and are good friends with many PR folks in the industry and it's the same thing there too.
It's a vicious cycle, I tell ya.
I've recently had an insightful and fantastic conversation with a fellow friend that happens to work in a prestigious PR firm in Toronto and I cannot believe how cut-throat that industry is.

The sad thing is that many well-meaning and sincere brands that are looking to constantly build their pipeline of dedicated advocates are just not aware of this. So they unfortunately get caught in a covetous web of notoriety.

Today my views have shifted a bit after experiencing an wonderfully pleasant post from a positive blogger that I am gratefully working with on a new program:

"Just thought I would get the ball rolling and make sure we are all backing one another up through out this entire campaign. If everyone can post their direct link to their Twitter account and Facebook Fan Pages {makes it easier for everyone to just click and follow}, this way we can help each other along the way in making this campaign a HUGE success. A successful campaign proves we are all top bloggers in our our niche. LET'S DO THIS LOVELIES!"
- Taralyn Ciula, Little Miss Mama

Seriously? That is an anomaly these days. I know because I work on a lot of campaigns with other bloggers and I don't see this type of support often.
It's brilliant and uplifting.

We need more bloggers like this in our community. Do you know how amazing it would be to be surrounded by those in your niche that think the way that she does?
I`m not asking all bloggers to gather together, arms over one another singing Kumbaya.
Let`s just get real -- Real supportive.

My intentions are honestly congenial and when I see others around me get great partnerships or write a really great blog post - you better believe I will Congratulate them and leave them a comment on that post (another rarity).
It's human nature to have pangs of desire but if we can turn all that energy into hard work, tolerance and rapport ... WOW, sign me up for that!

Why not Seek Affiliation not Domination?

Peace, love and chocolate cake.
Happy Friday!

Pardon My Absence

Hello? Anybody there? *crickets*
I do not blame you for teetering away from my blog the past couple of weeks as it has been pretty humdrum.

It's been probably one of the most busiest times for me and my family this year and I was not prepared for many things that have occurred.
No matter how much control we think we have over our lives, reality check, there's only so much we really do have control over.

Is it just me or does this saying fall true for you too? --> "When it rains, it pours."

How does one find the right balance when working from home, blogging, keeping two small children (including a baby) fed, entertained and unharmed all while sneaking in a quick bathroom break or cup of fresh & warm (not microwaved 2-3 times) coffee?
If you have succeeded at this, do share your tricks. This exhausted lady wants to know.

Seriously... by the time hubby gets home, I'm literally standing by the front door, baby in arms, hair a mess and ready to run and hide for more than 10 minutes and jump into a warm bubble bath... with wine and a relaxing stream from Songza.

So please, please pardon my absence. I am so grateful for my readers and your interest in my trivial domestic (yet still pretty cool and pseudo glam) life and everything in it.
Stick around. I promise there will be more awesome sauce content coming soon.

Crying Helps Me Write Better {Giveaway}

It took me about 20 minutes... 20 minutes of tears and blank stares at the computer screen while my 8 month old continuously sobbed in the background to write this paragraph that I'm writing right now.

My son is going through an extremely needy separation anxiety stage where he requires an arm and a heartbeat to place his head on otherwise the world is coming to an end. I feel bad for my 4 1/2 year old because she gets the short end of the stick these days with mommy focusing 80% on her brother, 10% on her (most of which is during classes - my daughter is home-schooled at the moment) and the other 10% on work.
I would say that's an unfair ratio, wouldn't you?
I try and balance my days as much as I can for my children (they are 1st priority) and then work. My blogging has been on the back burner as I have not only lacked time, but also ideas and inspiration.

This hurts me as a woman that has prided myself on my writing and the amazing and loyal readers that I have built in the 2 years that I have been actively writing and sharing my life with the online world.
Blogging was my escape and my chance to connect with other mothers and women out there during times when I really just felt very alone and needed to hear that I was doing okay. Doing okay as a mother that chose to say good-bye to her successful career and focus on my most important job, motherhood.

It wasn't until I received a copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul's Inspiration for Writers that I finally felt like invisible hands were lifting my broken pieces of creativity and slowly gluing them back together.

"Balancing Motherhood, family life, and writing is not easy. With the stress  and duties of daily life, it's hard to find the time to sit down and write. And I sometimes feel like the world has enough writers. We don't need one more. Nobody needs to hear my words.
Because who am I? Why should my words matter?
Well, my words do matter. All our words matter. They tell us who we are.
But words will never see the light of day without discipline.
Devoting time. Putting the word "write" onto an actual schedule to give it validity.
Your words represent who you are, and sometimes the duties of life can hide that person."
- Good Pasta by Mary C.M. Phillips, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Writers

"I feel fortunate to have found something I am passionate about, something that allows me to escape into the magical realm of make-believe on a daily basis. Ever since I regained my creativity, I appreciate it much more. Creativity solves problems and inspires curiosity.

Creativity unleashes big, beautiful dreams. Nurturing my creativity has not only made me a better write, it has made me a better person -- more optimistic, compassionate, and open to life's unending possibilities."
- How I Got My Creativity Back by Dallas Woodburn, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Writers

Just before writing this post, I had one of the best cries I've had in a while.
I really, really needed that.
It has been a really rough past few weeks -- horrible bouts of viruses and tears, the stress of work and deadlines, motherhood and everything else in between has finally kicked my butt.

I am so grateful for the support of my husband and family that have taken the time out of their day, to give me more time in mine. To allow me to exhale and work on nurturing my artistry.
And most importantly, to help me to discover who I am once again and why I started doing this to begin with.

I also am grateful to those that amongst their busy schedules, take the time to pour themselves a cup of tea or coffee (or wine!) and click onto my blog and actually read what my heart is saying translated into words.
Thank you for that. It means a lot more than you think.

I want to allow my readers, especially to those that understand what I'm saying in this blog post; those that are seeking a writing awakening and encouragement, a chance to get their hands on a copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul's Inspiration for Writers.
This book has helped me immensely and provided the motivation I need to start really writing again.
I hope it helps you.

"You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage -- pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically -- to say "no" to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger "yes" burning inside."
~ Stephen Covey

I'm giving away 3 copies of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Writers - Budding or Bestselling - from Books to Blogs and all you have to do is to comment below telling me
the reason WHY you started writing.

Why A Blogger Won't Want To Work With You

In the short yet very assiduous and fulfilling time span that I've been a Blogger, I've been so happy and fortunate enough to get connected and work with such innovative and brilliant brands of all shapes and sizes.

In the beginning when I began getting the emails from brands very interested in working with me to help promote their business, it was all so exciting!
Of course my initial reply was always "Yes!" because not only was I scoring some great freebies, but I was also  helping my blog get more recognition for working with this so and so and not to mention the giveaways.
Well, that was the mind frame of a very amateur (and slightly misinformed and uneducated blogger).

As the pitches came and went, I started to ask myself "Do I really want to work with this brand?" and "Will I lose credibility as a personal blogger (initially wanting to express and share my thoughts and stories) because all I'm doing now is just reviews & giveaways?"

Don't get me wrong, I have a multitude of Blogger friends that are strictly review & giveaway blogs that I absolutely adore and respect, hey, that's there niche! More power to them! I have nothing bad to say about that.
But, the reason I say this is because I want people to understand that if I'm to write my honest opinions and thoughts on a product (and the brand that it's attached to), they better be a product (brand) that a) I have already used or am very familiar with and admire or b) a product that sparks my interest and would fit well with my family and those of my readers.

The worse experience I had first of all, included another blogger's name in the initial email, then took weeks to reply to my emails, icing on the cake -- never replied back to me when I chose a winner for their giveaway (basically leaving me with a disgruntled winner). It wasn't until 3 months later that my winner finally received their prize.

Another pitch that got me annoyed to say the least was asking me to review their product via PDF attachment and website (with no physical product getting in my hands). How on earth am I suppose to write about something that I'm very new to without having to pay out of my pocket? What if I don't like it?
I just wasted my money.

Oh and let's not forget Miss/Mr Robotic. You know, that "person" that reaches out to you only to sound like they copied and pasted their email and don't even attempt some decent conversation?
*sigh*

Came across this wonderful post on Rafflecopter's Blog and definitely had to share it. Will share the 2nd part once it's up!
Many of these are the main reasons why Bloggers DON'T want to work with a Brand.

Inspiration is Contagious

Recently, a fellow twitter mom and writer of mumandchums.com, Sara Hodge, had called upon the help of fellow SCCTO attendee's to complete a mini survey to share their experience in the blogging and social media -world - how they got here and why? With all the responses she received she compiled a wonderful article, Inspiration is Contagious.  I was happy to take part and have my comments included in this article.

It's always refreshing to read what others have to say because we grow from learning.
It's a fantastic article for those that are quite new to blogging/writing and would like to hear from women that were in the same shoes not too long ago (me included!).
I'm still growing and absorbing all the wealth of information and advice I can get to better my content, all at the same time growing confident in my writing.
I wish you all a wonderful experience and please do share any tips, comments, questions you may have.

Connecting with other Digital Mom's

Have you been there? Perhaps it was changing a diaper and finding technicolor poop that drove you to search out other moms. Perhaps it was wondering if your child was hitting the right milestones or (finally!) a long nap. Whatever the case, find out how you can connect with other moms online.

Becoming a mom is an exciting, thrilling thing. But after giving birth, it can also be a very isolating and lonely time. As beautiful and precious as babies are, Moms need contact with other adults to keep them tethered to reality. That's what's so great about the internet. It has been very good for creating strong communities of people with common interests. Moms are no exception!

FOR MOMS-TO-BE AND NEW MOMS
Expectant women want as much information about everything from morning sickness to stretch marks. For new moms, there are other worries as they learn about the new life they've been charged with protecting.
That's why communities like those offered on Canadian Parents are so popular. Users can find other women with the same due date month, or even similar parenting philosophies, jobs or religions. They can also locate other women who are pregnant and live nearby.  Another great site for those entering the school-age years, sites like Today's Parent will provide invaluable parenting tips.
Are you wanting to find easy and healthy dinners for your family -- or possibly even share some great recipes of your own? ChefMom.com will help you find meals that everyone (even your picky eaters) will love.

SPECIAL INTERESTS
The web is the perfect place to find your niche. Whether you're looking to chat with like-minded others or have a specific issue you want to address in depth, everything you would ever need is online. For instance:
"Crunchy" moms: Women interested in a gentle, natural approach to mamahood -- complete with attachment parenting principles such as co-sleeping, babywearing and exclusive breastfeeding -- may find kinship in the Mothering magazine community.

Help with baby names: Need help on choosing a name for your baby, or just want to brainstorm baby names with other expectant parents? That's what the message boards at Babyhold.com and BabyNameCentral.com are all about.

Fitness-focused: Athletic and energetic moms might want to check out a site likeBabyfit to meet moms and moms-to-be who are working to keep fit.

Adoption:  Adopting a child can be a long and frustrating process -- with a wonderful reward at the end. Sites like Adoption.com will help parents connect with other adopting parents, as well as get information to guide them through the process of welcoming a child into their home.
MOM NETWORKING
The just-launched TwitterMoms is a growing sensation among mom bloggers, business owners and just about every woman whose given birth. Moms join groups, share insights and expand their network. Profiles link to Twitter, websites and more, letting moms share their breadth of experience and knowledge. "I've just gotten started on there, but from what I see, I really, really like it. And the connection I make everyday with other moms on Twitter itself has been fulfilling and fun," says Gina LaGuardia, editorial director and mom of two.
Sarah LeMieux, a musician and mom to a three-year-old, has also frequented TwitterMoms since shortly after it launched in September, but she also has a go-to site for interaction too. "Meetup is good for moms looking to meet other moms in real life," LeMieux says.

MOMMY BLOGGING
As far as moms online go, one vastly growing sector is the mom bloggers.  There is a blog for every demographic, every corner of the country, every interest. You can find some interesting bloggers at Canada Mom's Blog or She's Connected. For hip, young mamas or moms- to-be, there is Storked! over at Glamour, which is written by writer and single mom Christine Coppa. And I would be remiss to forget the highly addictive and touching Matt Logelin, who lost his wife Liz shortly after their daughter was born. For pregnant mamas who want to stay looking hip and stylish now that they are expecting, PregnancyFashion.com will give you the inside scoop on how to stay looking as hip as your favorite pregnant celebrity, as well as give you the basic essentials you will need to add to your wardrobe. Speaking of celebrities, CelebrityPregnancy.com is like reading your favorite gossip magazine -- online! You will find out who is expecting, who might be expecting, as well as see those fun first photos of A-list babies.

THE RIGHT ONE
Much like anything else, your best bet is to shop around. Check out as many sites as you can and decide which best meet your needs and desires. Don't be afraid to test drive a few before deciding on two or three sites to be your go-to's. If blogs are your thing, then be sure to sign up with a feed reader so that you can read as many as you like without the hassle of visiting dozens of sites.
Mom-oriented sites can be a very useful resource for moms to be and moms.
