Spreading some #RandomCupsofKindness with Tim Hortons

If you're like me, I tend to want to avoid watching the news because most times it's filled with things I'd much rather not see to keep my soul at peace.
Sometimes we really just need to do what we can, even if it's just the little things to lift spirits and bring some cheer to those around us.

As we celebrate and dwell in the festive and enchanting season of Joy, Peace and Happiness, I was thrilled to be chosen to take part in Tim Horton's special Holiday initiative named Random Cups of Kindness.

Throughout this week from December 18th to December 22nd at Tim Horton's restaurants across the country, Employers and selected Bloggers are surprising guests by paying for their meals/coffee.
It’s their way of thanking their customers before the holidays.

I have a bundle of Tim Horton's Gift Cards waiting to be distributed to deserving strangers randomly throughout the GTA!
I cannot wait to get started tonight; my first stop is the local hospital where I recently gave birth to my son, Brampton Civic Hospital.

You can follow along on the fun and surprises if you're on Twitter by following the #RandomCupsofKindness stream.

Have you done a random act of kindness lately?

Nothing says Christmas like delectable treats and enticing dishes.
The smell of cinnamon, vanilla, gingerbread and many other tantalizing and familiar scents filling the home as we prepare for the Holiday festivities. I love it!

2012 Holiday Gift Guide & Christmas Giveaways

It's the most wonderful time of the year!
I am a true Christmas Lover.  Just about everything about it makes me super joyful and high-spirited -- the lights, the decor, the music, the smell of vanilla and cinnamon and of course, the shopping!
There's nothing more exciting for me than shopping for gifts.  I love shopping in general of course, but it truly does feel amazing when you're taking the time to find that perfect gift for someone special.

I know for many, especially during this very frenzied time of year, shopping can be quite chaotic and most often not as fun as it's meant to be.  What happens? You end up getting a not-so-perfect gift and getting the 'Oh thank you (for this gift I will probably never use -- what were you thinking?)' fake reaction from your loved one or a very unhappy child.  An unhappy child strung up on Christmas cookies and sweets isn't very fun.  In fact, it's quite frightening.

I've scoured the web and have finally compiled a list of Holiday Gift Goodies that I'm definite will be a hit for every single person on your list.

This happy Mama with one of my ultimate must-haves on the Gift Guide!
I can vouch for many of these items as I also own them myself and/or have purchased them for someone close to me so in terms of quality, style and price -- I've got you covered!

Browsing & shopping in one of our favourite places, perfect for Holiday Gifts: Chapters Indigo!

Happy Shopping!

10 Things Your Party Host Won't Tell You

Life has become a lot more casual these days—jeans for work, texting instead of calling—but that doesn't mean there aren't still rules of etiquette, especially when holiday festivities are involved. If you're expecting to be a guest this holiday season, make sure you understand the ins and outs of party protocol. Whether you're going to a cocktail party or formal dinner, find out the 10 things you need to know to avoid offenses or an embarrassing faux pas.

1. RSVP on time.
Make sure to respond to the RSVP as soon as possible. "If there’s an RSVP date, try to follow that," says Lizzie Post, spokeswoman for The Emily Post Institute and great-great-granddaughter of etiquette expert Emily Post. "Even if you're not sure you can make it and need to check your schedule, this is your chance to buy yourself a little time." She recommends calling or emailing to let them know your situation. "This is also your chance to ask what you can bring, whom you can bring and what you should wear if it's not indicated on the invitation."

2. Bring a gift…and leave it there!
Unless it's a good friend whom you entertain with regularly (i.e., on a monthly basis) or it's a potluck and you're already toting food or drinks, bring a gift for your host. "A hostess gift goes a long way," says Amanda from Chicago. "It shows you've thought about how generous it was for me to open my home to you." And it doesn't have to be extravagant, according to Post. This is really a case where it's the thought that counts. "It can be anything; even small consumables like candies, treats or wine are awesome," she suggests. But on the flip side, she notes that guests shouldn’t expect their host to share the gift with them. "Your host gift does not have to be served that night, so don't be offended if the host puts it away. And if it's not eaten or finished while you are there, do not take it with you!"

3. Don't bring uninvited guests.
Whether it's your significant other, a friend or your dog, bringing an extra guest may just be the biggest mistake a guest can make, says Post. "As for bringing Rover, you don’t know whether it's a no-pets home; as for bringing an extra friend, you don't know whether there's enough food." Bottom line: Don't bring anyone—two- or four-legged—unless you've talked to your host first.

4. Deliver on promised goods.
The last thing a host wants at a potluck dinner is just desserts and salad. "You don't know how the host has structured the meal. So if you show up with dessert when you said you'd bring an appetizer, you may have nixed out an entire course," Post says. "Make sure to call ahead if you're thinking about switching."

5. Avoid criticisms.
First thing's first: Keep your negative opinions about your host's decor to yourself. "Don’t make suggestions about how I should decorate my apartment," Amanda says. "If I had the money to make some home improvements, I would." But that's not really enough, according to Post—you should say something positive about it. "You don't have to say it's the most amazing decorating you've ever seen and ask for the decorator's number," she says. "But you can at least say, 'Your house is lovely, it feels so much like a home.’"

6. Try to be outgoing.
Even if you don't know anyone, attempt to be social. It's a party; you're supposed to meet new people. "There’s nothing worse than seeing a friend or couple standing in the corner by themselves at a party—it makes me feel obligated to spend more than my fair share of time entertaining them when I need to make my way around the room," says Heidi from New York City. "Every guest has at least one thing in common—the host/hostess!" Use that idea next time you’re stumped for conversation, and ask guests who they know and how they know them.

7. Don't be too early…or too late!
If your host is preparing a formal soirĂ©e (like a dinner, engagement or birthday), it’s likely they’ve timed their party prep very precisely—which means showing up early throws off those last precious minutes they need to prep. "I think this is where the term 'fashionably late' came from," says Post. "You want to give the host a little cushion to finish getting ready. Besides, you don't want to be the first to show up." Unless it’s a casual cocktail party, it’s equally bad form to be late. "Don’t show up more than 15 minutes after the start time of the party, because then you're really pushing it," says Post.

8. Be open to different foods.
"Don't complain about the food or drinks," says Tracy from California. "Unless you have an allergy, you shouldn't say anything." For instance, Post can't stand cilantro, but she never tells her host and just picks it off. However, she adds: "It's important to let them know if you are a vegetarian or a vegan. But because that is a choice of yours, it’s also important to offer to bring a dish. Then the host can say whether you'll be fine with what she’s serving or that she’d love for you to bring something extra."

9. Say goodbye when you leave.
Jeanette from Omaha, Nebraska, hates when guests leave without telling her. "Never leave without personally saying goodbye and thank you," she says. The reason? For one thing, you don't want your host to wonder if someone was locked in the bathroom or got sick. But more important, it's ungracious. "If the host is mid-conversation, you can probably wait a couple of seconds," says Post. "This person had you over and she’s wined and dined you, so it's only polite. It's also just nice to let people know when you're exiting their home."

10. Follow up with a thank-you call or email.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's a little more involved than just saying thank you on the way out. "As a guest, it's really nice to call up your host the next day," Post advises. "You could even pop a note in the mail, or at the very least send an email." Not only is it polite, but it really makes your host feel good, and it will help him or her when deciding whom to invite next time!

Marshmallow Snowflakes

The Christmas Holidays is around the corner and I've already begun to search for great Holiday Party ideas since I will be hosting for the first time our annual Family Christmas Party in our new home.
I came across this super adorable idea on Martha Stewart and knew I was definitely going to have to do this.

Float these snowflake-shaped marshmallows in cups of hot chocolate. Absolutely perfect to serve your guests during the upcoming Christmas Party!

MARSHMALLOW SNOWFLAKES
Yield
Makes about 100

Ingredients:

- 2 envelopes (each 1 scant tablespoon) unflavored gelatin
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2/3 cup light corn syrup
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
-Vegetable-oil cooking spray

Directions:

1.  Coat a 12-by-17-inch rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray; line with parchment paper. Spray parchment; set aside. Pour 1/3 cup cold water into the bowl of an electric mixer. Sprinkle with gelatin; let mixture soften, about 5 minutes.

2.  Place sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 1/3 cup water in a medium saucepan. Cover; bring to a boil. Remove lid; cook, swirling pan occasionally, until syrup reaches 238 degrees (soft-ball stage) on a candy thermometer, about 5 minutes.

3.  With mixer on low speed, whisk gelatin mixture, and slowly pour the syrup in a steady stream down the side of the bowl (to avoid splattering). Gradually raise speed to high; beat until mixture is thick, white, and has almost tripled in volume, about 12 minutes. Add vanilla, and beat 30 seconds to combine.

4.  Pour mixture onto prepared baking sheet; smooth with an offset spatula. Let stand at room temperature, uncovered, until firm, at least 3 hours or overnight.

5.  Coat a 1- or 2-inch snowflake-shaped cookie cutter with cooking spray to prevent it from sticking. Cut out as many individual marshmallows as possible; coat cutter with more spray as needed. Use marshmallows immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature up to 1 week.

Toshiba Holiday Heroes Brand Ambassador

I am absolutely thrilled to announce that I was chosen by She's Connected to be one of the 44 women to be a Brand Ambassador for Toshiba Canada's Holiday Heroes Campaign! *Jumping up & down*
And what makes it more exciting is that I was chosen in the first batch of 22! Woohoo!  It was like the moment when you applied for a job that you really wanted, anxiously awaiting a phone call (in this case, an email) and then surprise, surprise! :)

She's Connected recently introduced their new Brand Ambassador program and this happened to be the first opportunity. Of course I jumped at it. I am a huge fan of Toshiba (even way prior to this campaign!)
and I also recently received my new white Toshiba laptop as a birthday gift in August because I fell in love with it!
If there's one electronic brand that delivers in seriously high performance, durability and looks and constantly evolving with today's technology, it's Toshiba.
Their products just keep getting better and better so I'm definitely looking forward to checking out their Tablet and 3D HDTV.

Keep your eyes peeled for my super awesome review within the next couple of weeks!

Thank you, Donna Marie, and the wonderful team at She's Connected and Toshiba for this fantastic opportunity! You picked well! ;)

Tips for Stress-Free & Enjoyable Holiday Shopping

Halloween is over, thus signaling the start of the long holiday season.  Many run around crazy busy trying to get it all done.  Between parties, shopping, cooking and trying to relax and enjoy everything it is hard to stay calm.
The holiday shopping season is upon us.  As wonderful as this Holiday is, this season can be a real source of stress for many reasons: money woes, pressure about the right gift, tons of people everywhere.  I am sure there are few things I did not mention. It can end up being too stressful!
Here are a few simple holiday shopping tips:
Start Early- It is really never too early to start your Christmas shopping.   For one, It’s extremely satisfying and rewarding come check a task of your to do list.  You also eliminate the stress that rushing around brings. Starting early gives you an opportunity to spend your time doing something you want to like spending time with family members instead of standing in long lines, fighting over the last top. A concern of starting early is that you may possibly miss out on the sales. The truth is a really good sale will not be hard to find. .
Carry a List- Getting and Staying prepared will help. Making a list will keep you  organized and on budget.   Make a list for every person you plan on buying a list for and how much you plan to spend. This will help you stay focused.
Plan your trip- If you most visit a store during the peak time. Get in and Get Out. At least have an idea of about what you items you are going to the store for.  The best time to visit a store is right when they open up. Unless of course there is a Door Buster sale, in that case avoid it at all cost unless you like the madness.
Schedule a babysitter for 6 hours. We make this an event! Neither my husband nor I enjoy (holiday) shopping so we try and make it as painless as possible. Without Ava we can move faster, and we can handle everything at one time. If you have/had a toddler, you know what I'm talking about! We are also incented to be productive because the faster we get done; the faster we get to our reward dinner!
Shop in Cyber Space- Shopping online is even more popular than it was years ago. It has become a great alternative. The sales are great, it is convenient, saves time and money. Several retailers offer free shipping during the Holiday season or the option to ship to the store for pick up and no fee.  Shopping online is also great for comparison shopping.
Stay Safe- Regardless of if you are shopping in store or online. It is important that you shop safe. When you’re shopping in a store remember to keep your credit cards safe and if you’re paying cash, don’t take it all out of your wallet at once. Shopping online is so much safer than you might think. However you still want to go with your instincts. Stick with major retailer and Major Payment Processing companies, such as paypal, amazon, etc,   these sites have made sure the correct safety measures have been put in place for your peace of mind and theirs. If you look at the top of your screen where the website address is displayed, you should see https://. The “s” that is displayed after “http” indicates that site is secure. Sometimes you won’t see the “s” until you go to the checkout or shopping cart sections, so stop there before you begin shopping to be sure.
This is one of my favorite times of the year.  Taking a little extra time to organize your shopping allows you to enjoy the season, and save money.
Your Turn – I would love to hear how you save time and money handling your holiday shopping?
